Coal Ministry holds stakeholder consultation, launches 15th coal mine auction round

The Ministry of Coal hosted a key stakeholder consultation on ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat: Coal for Energy Security’ in Mumbai, alongside the launch of the 15th round of commercial coal mine auctions, yesterday.

Coal Secretary Vikram Dev Dutt formally launched the auction round, highlighting that the introduction of commercial coal mining in 2020 marked a transformational shift by boosting competition, encouraging private participation, and improving domestic coal availability. He emphasised the need for a whole-of-government approach, calling for coordinated efforts among ministries, state governments, and industry stakeholders to simplify regulations and create an enabling ecosystem.

The consultation featured discussions on technology adoption, innovation, and coal gasification, as well as inclusive growth through rehabilitation, resettlement, land repurposing, worker welfare, corporate social responsibility, and a just transition for affected communities.

A total of 11 coal blocks, including 7 fully explored and 4 partially explored mines, have been offered in the current round. These blocks are located across Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, and Telangana and are expected to attract significant investment, enhance domestic coal supply, and generate employment.
