A one-day special session of the Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly was convened today to discuss the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami moved a proposal in the House to adopt a unanimous resolution supporting the Central Government for the early implementation of the Act, which aims to provide 33 per cent reservation for women in Parliament and state legislatures.
Mr Dhami said the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, introduced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2023, is a significant step towards ensuring rightful representation for half of the country’s population. He criticized the opposition parties for not supporting the 131st Constitutional Amendment Bill in the Lok Sabha. Mr. Dhami said that the opposition is now attempting to mislead people on women’s reservation issue.
The Chief Minister also appealed to the opposition to rise above partisan interests and adopt a positive and clear stand on the crucial issue of women’s empowerment.
Leader of Opposition Yashpal Arya said that merely increasing the number of seats would not ensure real empowerment for women. He also questioned the process of census and delimitation, calling it politically motivated. The Leader of Opposition demanded implementation of 33 per cent reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and its enforcement in Uttarakhand by 2027.
