Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan today said fertilisers are becoming increasingly difficult to procure from the international market and called for greater emphasis on organic farming to reduce dependence on chemical fertilisers. Addressing the Eastern Zonal Agriculture Conference in Bhubaneswar, Mr Chouhan said the Centre is making all efforts to ensure adequate fertiliser supply for farmers despite global constraints. He warned against diversion of subsidised fertilisers and asked states to take strict action against suppliers of duplicate and poor-quality fertilisers. The Union Minister also highlighted the Centre’s approval of forty-one thousand crore rupees towards fertiliser subsidy and reiterated the government’s commitment to farmers’ welfare. Expressing concern over possible El Nino conditions and deficient rainfall during the crop season, Mr Chouhan advised farmers to opt for crops less vulnerable to rainfall fluctuations. He also announced that a nationwide “Save the Farm Campaign” will be launched from 1st to 15th of June this year to spread awareness about modern agricultural technologies and government schemes.
