Union Consumer Affairs Minister Prahlad Joshi has said that the government is dedicated to reducing regulatory burdens by enhancing marketplace fairness through smart regulation and responsive governance.
Addressing a function virtually on World Metrology Day 2026, Mr Joshi stressed the need to make legal metrology a cornerstone of consumer confidence and industrial accuracy to strengthen quality and standards. He said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has envisioned that the quality of Indian products must meet global standards and be environmentally sustainable.
Mr Joshi said the primary aim of legal metrology is to ensure absolute fairness in society by regulating and verifying the accuracy of all weights and measures to protect consumer interests.
The Minister said this year’s theme, “Metrology: Building Trust in Policy Making”, highlights the importance of accuracy in metrology for reliable and objective public policy. He said India has been a front-runner in adopting uniform measurement systems since the time of the Indus Valley Civilisation.
He added that the government is working towards developing a National Legal Metrology Portal. Mr Joshi said India has now become the 13th country worldwide to issue International Organization of Legal Metrology (OIML) approval certificates, strengthening its global standing.
He further said that domestic manufacturers can now export their weighing and measuring instruments worldwide without incurring additional testing fees, resulting in significant cost savings.
