West Bengal CM Suvendu Adhikari calls for greater transparency in Assembly proceedings

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has called for greater transparency in Assembly proceedings by proposing live streaming of Question Hour, debates, bills, and budget sessions. The remarks were made during a special session in which BJP legislator Rathindra Basu from Cooch Behar South was unanimously elected Speaker of the 18th Legislative Assembly.

The Chief Minister said, people have every right to see the functioning of their elected representatives, which can be ensured through live telecast of Assembly proceedings. He added that although the government has a majority, the House belongs to the Opposition and assured that opposition members will get adequate opportunity to speak.

Congratulating the new Speaker, the Chief Minister urged all parties to uphold democratic traditions and maintain decorum in the House, ruling out any return to past unrest and stressing accountability in legislative proceedings. He also said that all legislators would have open access to the government, and ministers have been instructed to give due importance to local MLAs in administrative matters.

Newly elected Leader of the Opposition and TMC leader Shovon Deb Chattopadhyay, along with members of Congress, CPI(M), and the Aam Janata Unnayan Party, thanked the Speaker following his election.
