Severe heatwave grips Odisha; IMD issues yellow alert in multiple districts

Odisha is reeling under a severe heatwave, with temperatures crossing 40°C in several districts. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued yellow warnings in many districts, citing intense heat coupled with high humidity. Jharsuguda has recorded one of the highest temperatures of about 45°C in the country this season, while Talcher and Boudh are also witnessing extreme conditions. The capital, Bhubaneswar, crossed 40°C yesterday, intensifying discomfort for residents.

Western districts, including Bolangir, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Keonjhar, and Khordha, remain under heatwave alert. Coastal districts such as Cuttack, Puri, and Ganjam are experiencing hot and humid weather.

In view of the prevailing conditions, the state government is planning to advance summer vacations for all schools from this Monday. Outdoor government activities, including census work, have been suspended between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. Health authorities have advised people to stay indoors during peak hours, remain hydrated, and avoid strenuous outdoor activity.
