Jal Mahotsav 2026 begins nationwide; focus on women, rainwater harvesting

Jal Mahotsav 2026 has begun today with the observance of Jal Arpan Diwas across the country, coinciding with International Women’s Day. Inaugurating the nationwide campaign in Gujarat, Minister for Jal Shakti C. R. Paatil spoke about the role of women in water governance and urged citizens to promote rainwater harvesting and responsible water use.
 
Mr. Paatil said the Mahotsav will be observed till 22nd of this month to promote community participation and sustainable management of rural drinking water systems. 
 
The initiative marks the handing over of rural drinking water supply assets to Gram Panchayats and Village Water and Sanitation Committees, strengthening community ownership under the Jal Jeevan Mission. Ministers of State for Jal Shakti V. Somanna graced the celebration in Bihar, and Raj Bhushan Choudhary joined the programme in Maharashtra.
