FIR registered against TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee in connection with West Bengal polls remarks

In West Bengal, an FIR has been registered against Trinamool Congress leader and Member of Parliament Abhishek Banerjee in connection with alleged provocative remarks made during the campaigning for the recently concluded West Bengal Assembly polls. The complainant alleges that certain remarks, including comments directed at Union Home Minister Amit Shah, were widely circulated on social media, including the MP’s official Facebook page.

Meanwhile, in a separate development, the West Bengal government has suspended three senior IPS officers, including former Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal, in connection with alleged lapses in the investigation of the RG Kar Medical College rape and murder case. Announcing the decision, the Chief Minister said that serious procedural irregularities were found in the handling of the case. The RG Kar incident, involving the rape and murder of a junior doctor in August 2024, had sparked nationwide outrage and protests by medical professionals and civil society groups demanding justice and accountability.
