The Chief Justice of India, Justice Surya Kant, has advised judicial officers to ensure that technology serves to enhance, and not replace, the human elements that define justice. He was speaking at the 22nd Biennial State-Level Conference of Judicial Officers on “Reimagining the Judiciary in the Era of Artificial Intelligence (AI)”, organised by the Karnataka State Judicial Officers Association in Bengaluru today.
The Chief Justice emphasised that the judiciary must be technologically adept yet philosophically grounded. He stressed that the integration of AI into the judicial process must be guided by the principle of balance, leveraging its benefits to enhance efficiency while steadfastly preserving the human intellect, experience, and constitutional consciousness that lie at the heart of justice. He added that the judiciary must embrace innovation, but without diluting its human character.
The Chief Justice asked judicial officers to approach adjudication not merely as an exercise in applying legal principles but as an engagement with realities. He pointed out that justice is not reduced to a mechanical process but remains responsive to the human condition it seeks to regulate.
