The RG Kar Medical College rape and murder case will be heard by the division bench of Justice Shampa Sarkar and Justice Tirthankar Ghosh of the Calcutta High Court. Earlier, Justice Raja Shekhar Mantha and Justice Rai Chattopadhyay recused themselves from the case on May 11th. Sanjay Roy, the lone convicted in this case was sentenced to life imprisonment in January 2025. The case is under the investigation of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) which demanded death sentence where as Sanjay Roy pleaded for his release.

The victim’s parents has sought another investigation into this case. The parents of the deceased doctor filed a case at the Sealdah court in Kolkata in which they appealed for arrest of former TMC MLA Nirmal Ghosh, Sanjib Mukhopadhyay and the then Officer in Charge of the Ghola Police station. The victim’s parents complained the three persons obstructed the second time post mortem of the body of the doctor and cremated the body in haste without following proper procedures.
