The World Health Organisation (WHO) has praised India for making significant progress in the fight against tuberculosis (TB). In a statement released yesterday, the WHO highlighted that India’s detection gap for TB cases has narrowed, and TB-related deaths have started to show improvement.
The WHO’s Global Tuberculosis Report 2025 pointed out that while TB rates continue to vary across the South-East Asia Region, India, along with Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, and Thailand, has made steady progress, with declines in TB-related mortality. In India, an estimated 2.71 million people are living with TB.
However, the country has seen improvements in case detection and mortality rates compared to previous years, especially after the recovery of essential TB services post-COVID-19. The report said, countries like Myanmar and Timor-Leste continue to experience higher TB incidence rates, with around 480-500 cases per lakh population.
