West Bengal Elections: Phase 2 Polling Concludes Peacefully, Turnout Reaches 90% by 5 PM

In West Bengal, voting in the second and final phase of the state assembly elections has concluded, with polling largely being peaceful across most of the districts. Election Commission informed by 5 p.m. average turnout reached to 90 percent. In Kolkata, votes were held in 11 constituencies. Bhabanipur drew particular attention, as Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Opposition Leader Subhendu Adhikari are contesting from this constituency. There tensions flared up several times. Early in the day, opposition leader Suvendu Adhikari clashed with Trinamool Congress workers. Security forces intervened, dispersing crowds with baton charges and deploying armored vehicles. In Howrah’s Bali area, central forces removed several individuals following complaints of booth jamming. Meanwhile, voting in Nadia and Hooghly districts were by and large peaceful.

Reports of sporadic incident came in from South 24 Parganas, including Falta. Allegations surfaced that the BJP candidate’s name on an EVM machine had been covered with tape. Chief Electoral Officer Manoj Kumar Agarwala stated that if irregularities are proven, repolling will be done in those booths. In Panihati, BJP candidate Ratna Debnath faced protests during a booth visit, with Trinamool Congress accused of staging demonstrations against her.

Overall, despite pockets of tension, the day’s polling was marked by high voter participation and strong security presence.
