Vote counting underway for Nepal’s 275 House of Representatives seats

Counting is ongoing for votes cast for 275 seats of the House of Representatives on Thursday, which took place across Nepal in a single phase.

Out of 165 constituencies, as of now, Final results have been declared from 6 constituencies. Among the 15 mountainous districts of Nepal, transportation of ballot papers by helicopter was delayed on Friday evening due to adverse weather in three districts: Sankhuwasabha, Dolpa and Gorkha. Meanwhile, the counting of votes is ongoing in the remaining places. The Rastriya Swatantra Party is leading in 113 constituencies under the first-past-the-post system; by present speculations, it appears that Balenendra Shah may rise as the new face of Nepal. As of now, Balen himself has secured 13,654 votes, while his rival, former prime minister K.P. Sharma Oli, has received 3,011 votes. Nepali Congress’s candidates, Tek Bahadur Gurung from Manang district and Yogesh Gauchan Thakali from Mustang, have won in the House of Representatives election by collecting 2,415 votes to emerge victorious. Co-chairman of the Nepali Communist Party (NCP) and former Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ has been elected from Rukum East, having won the election by securing 10,240 votes out of a total 19,188 votes cast. Candidate of the Rastriya Swatantra Party from constituency no. 8 of Kathmandu, Birajbhakta Shrestha; Shishir Khanal of Kathmandu-6; and Ranju Neupane from Kathmandu-1 have been declared victorious.
