The special rocket launch was the main attraction at Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, Thiruvananthapuram, today. The small rocket called RH 200 with a 200 millimetre diameter was launched from VSSC Thumpa launch pad at 11.45 am. Students and the general public assembled at safe viewing points at VSSC, watched the launch and its movements till the burning of the second stage.
Wind study objects called Chaffs were ejected from the rocket during its movements up to 65 kilometres from sea level. These ejected objects will move according to the wind direction. These Chaffs are being observed by radars to assess wind and to help predict weather, and for many other studies. At school, programmes were organised in around 600 schools in Kerala as part of National Space Day celebrations.
