Vice Admiral Sanjay Vatsayan has been appointed as the next Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Western Naval Command, headquartered in Mumbai. He will take charge of one of the Indian Navy’s most strategically important commands, responsible for safeguarding India’s western maritime front and key sea lanes in the Arabian Sea. He is currently serving as the Vice Chief of Naval Staff.
A specialist in Gunnery and Missile Systems, Vice Admiral Vatsayan was commissioned into the Indian Navy in 1988. He has served for over three decades in key operational, command, and staff appointments. During his career, he has served on several frontline warships and has commanded multiple naval vessels, including missile boats, a missile corvette, and a guided missile frigate. He has also held important policy and planning roles at Naval Headquarters and at the Integrated Defence Staff.
He was awarded the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal in 2021 in recognition of his distinguished service.
