Veteran Akali leader Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa passes away at 89

The mortal remains of the veteran Akali leader and former Union Minister, Sh. Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa will be cremated tomorrow at 01.00 PM at his native village, Ubhawal, in Sangrur district.

 

Sh. Dhindsa, who passed away at 89, yesterday, was Lok Sabha MP from Sangrur from the Shiromani Akali Dal. He was also Union Minister of sports, chemicals and fertilizers in Atal Bihari Vajpayee government.

 

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed grief over the demise of Sh. Dhindsa. In a social media post, Mr. Modi said that the passing of Mr. Dhindsa is a major loss to the country. The Prime Minister said, Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa was a towering statesman with great wisdom and an unwavering commitment to public service. He added that the departed leader always had a grassroots level connection with Punjab’s people and culture. Prime Minister highlighted that Sh. Dhindsa championed issues like rural development, social justice and worked to make the country’s social fabric even stronger. Recalling his interactions with Mr. Dhindsa, the Prime Minister said that he had the privilege of knowing him for many years.

 

Punjab Chief Minister and leaders from various political parties have condoled his demise.
