Vaishakha Buddha Purnima Celebrated as Civilisational Event, Not Just Festival: Minister Gajendra Shekhawat

Minister of Culture and Tourism Gajendra Singh Shekhawat today said that Vaishakha Buddha Purnima is a civilizational event and not just a religious festival. Speaking at the celebration of Vaishakha Buddha Purnima Divas in New Delhi, he said that Buddhist ideals are universal truths that hold a special place in the hearts of millions of people around the world. He said that the legacy of Lord Buddha is not only the custodians of his sacred sites but also the spreading of his teachings and timeless messages.

The minister added that the teachings of Buddha were born in India, but they travelled across the world and culture, bringing peace and awakening to civilisation in Asia and beyond. Mr Shekhawat said that the government is committed to preserving, promoting and sharing the Buddha’s heritage through art, architecture and international dialogues.

Speaking on the occasion, Minister of Minority Affairs Kiren Rijiju said that the teachings of Buddha transcend religion; it is our duty as an Indian community to abide by them. He said that there are seven communities in the nation, and Buddha is a part of every faith that upholds peace. He also highlighted the importance of harmony and cultural preservation. Mr Rijiju added that the application of Buddha’s teaching is universal and essential for a peaceful lifestyle and inner strength.

Two exhibitions were also showcased in the programme, highlighting the cultural and spiritual significance of the day. These exhibitions were part of the United Nations Vesak Day 2025 celebrations in Vietnam held alongside the exposition of the Holy Relics of the Buddha from Sarnath across four Vietnamese cities. The event also featured screenings of a documentary on the dissemination of Buddha Dhamma in Asia and a film on the exposition of the holy relics of the Buddha.
