Uttarakhand: Relief & rescue operations on war footing; 372 people evacuated so far

In Uttarakhand, relief and rescue operations are being carried out at a fast pace in the Dharali-Harsil region of Uttarkashi district. The deployment of a Chinook helicopter today has significantly accelerated the rescue efforts. As of 6 PM today, 372 people have been safely rescued and brought from the Gangotri region to Harsil.

Our Dehradun correspondent reports that relief operations in the disaster-affected areas are being conducted on a war footing with the coordinated efforts of the Army, Air Force, ITBP, NDRF, SDRF, and the police-administration. With the weather clearing up, many people stranded in affected areas have been airlifted by helicopter from Dharali-Harsil to the ITBP Matli camp and Jolly Grant Helipad in Dehradun. Essential relief materials including drinking water, medicines, and food supplies are also being delivered to the stranded via helicopter to ensure no shortage of necessities.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami stated that all necessary steps are being taken swiftly, with priority being given to relief, rescue, and rehabilitation.

Efforts are ongoing on a war footing to restore the Gangotri National Highway between Uttarkashi and Harsil-Dharali, which had been blocked. A 250-meter stretch of road near Papadgad and Bhatwari has now been restored. Meanwhile, repair work is also underway to reopen the route near Ganganani-Limchagad, where a bridge was washed away.

In a significant move to expedite the rescue mission, a 125 KVA generator set was airlifted today from Dehradun to the affected area by a Chinook helicopter. This will help in temporarily restoring power supply to the region.
