US warns Canada over comments ahead of trade deal review

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has warned Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney that his recent public comments against US trade policy could backfire going into the formal review of the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement, the trade deal that protects Canada from the most severe impacts of President Donald Trump’s tariffs. Carney delivered a high-profile speech last week at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, condemning economic coercion by great powers against smaller countries. Since then, he has clashed with both Trump and Bessent on related trade issues.

However, on Saturday, US President Trump threatened to impose a 100 percent tariff on goods imported from Canada over a trade deal that Carney is pursuing with Beijing.
