US Vice President JD Vance has said European leaders should take President Donald Trump seriously on Greenland. Mr Vance said that Greenland is important for global missile defence as hostile adversaries are showing interest in the region. He warned that if Europe does not strengthen security there, the US may be forced to act.
US VP Vance said Secretary of State Marco Rubio would meet leaders of Denmark and Greenland next week to convey these concerns. The White House has confirmed it is considering a range of options to acquire Greenland, and that the use of military force is not off the table, and is important to deter the adversaries in the Arctic region.
President Trump also launched a sharp attack on the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO), claiming the alliance relies heavily on Washington for its survival and said that his pressure forced NATO’s members to increase defence spending to 5 percent of GDP. His remarks came amid European leaders rejecting Trump’s renewed remarks about Greenland, asserting that Arctic security must be addressed collectively.
