US signals progress in trade talks with India, deal possible this year

Washington has signalled progress in trade negotiations with India, with a senior US official citing a lot of positive developments and suggesting a deal could emerge before the end of the year.

Talks are focused on a reciprocal trade agreement to balance tariffs and market access, alongside concerns over India’s purchases of Russian oil.

The official highlighted improvements on the Russian oil front while noting more work remains. The announcement comes amid Washington’s broader trade efforts, including finalised preliminary deals with Argentina, El Salvador, Ecuador, and Guatemala, as well as discussions with Vietnam, Indonesia, and Switzerland.

US President Donald Trump indicated potential tariff reductions on Indian imports as Sergio Gor assumes his role as ambassador to India. US-India trade reached around 190 billion dollars in 2024, with both nations aiming to boost bilateral commerce.
