US President Trump set to meet Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado at White House

US President Donald Trump is set to meet the Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado at the White House in Washington DC today. María Machado’s political party is widely considered to have won 2the 024 elections rejected by then-President Nicolás Maduro, before the United States captured him in a raid this month. Earlier, Trump had dismissed Machado’s credibility to run Venezuela.

Trump and his top advisers have signalled their willingness to work with acting President Delcy Rodríguez, who was Maduro’s vice president. The US President said that he had a great conversation with Rodríguez yesterday, their first since Maduro was ousted. He added that they discussed a lot of things. In endorsing Rodríguez, Trump has sidelined Machado, who has long been a face of resistance in Venezuela. The meeting comes at a time when Venezuela is facing an uncertain political transition following Nicolás Maduro’s capture by the US.
