The United States of America has approved the sale of advanced NASAMS missile systems to Taiwan. It marks the Washington’s second major weapons package for Taipei in a week. The medium-range air defence system will be a new addition to Taiwan’s military capabilities.
According to the Pentagon, the contract is fixed price and completion is expected in 2031, with funds obligated from Taiwan’s 2026 foreign military sales budget. The deal reinforces US backing for Taiwan at a time of rising regional tensions, including Chinese military activities around the island and disputes involving Japan. Taipei continues to strengthen its defences as it faces sustained pressure from Beijing.
