Union Minister Prahlad Joshi Says India Achieves 50% Non-Fossil Fuel Power Target Ahead of Schedule

India has achieved its goal of sourcing 50 percent of its electricity from non-fossil fuel sources, five years ahead of its own target. This was stated by Union New and Renewable Energy Minister Prahlad Joshi on the sidelines of the Resilient Futures Summit 2026 in New Delhi today. The Minister underlined that India ranks 3rd globally in renewable energy capacity, reflecting the country’s strong commitment and rapid progress.

Mr Joshi noted that India recorded 55.29 GigaWatt non-fossil capacities in 2025-26, including the highest-ever solar addition of 44.61 GigaWatt and a record 6.05 GigaWatt wind capacity. The Minister said that these achievements reflect a significant rise in renewable energy investments. Talking to media, Mr Joshi informed that nearly 30 percent of the country’s electricity is now generated from a mix of renewable sources including wind, solar, battery storage and pumped storage.
