Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari today said that India has entered a new era of technology-driven highway management, with the launch of the Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) barrier-less toll collection system. Inaugurating the advanced tolling system at Mundka Bakkarwala toll plaza in New Delhi, Mr Gadkari said this initiative will eliminate long waiting times at toll plazas and significantly reduce fuel wastage, pollution and travel delays.
The Minister said that this initiative will save fuel worth 285 crore rupees and reduce CO2 emissions by 81 thousand tonnes every year. Mr Gadkari said the MLFF system uses FASTag, Automatic Number Plate Recognition technology and AI-based cameras to enable seamless toll collection without stopping vehicles. He said motorists will be able to pass through toll corridors at speeds of up to 100 kilometres per hour, and the toll payments will be deducted automatically.
The Minister said that operational costs in toll collection, which earlier stood at nearly 15 per cent, will now come down to about 3 to 4 per cent, leading to annual savings of around six to seven thousand crore rupees.
