Power Minister Manohar Lal today highlighted the crucial role of power distribution companies DISCOMs terming it the backbone of the country’s power sector. Mr Lal was addressing the first Annual Conference of All India DISCOMs Association, Electricity Distribution Industry (EDICON) 2026 in New Delhi. He said that the government has done major reforms in the power sector by providing incentives for energy storage and smart metering to strengthen the financial health of DISCOMs. Mr Lal stressed the need for financially strong, efficient, and consumer-centric distribution utilities.
The Minister said the reforms have also helped to reduce Aggregate Technical and Commercial losses and register profitability across utilities. He reiterated the government’s full support in building a resilient, sustainable, and future-ready power distribution sector. The Minister emphasised that electricity has transitioned from a social responsibility two decades ago to a key economic driver now.
