Parliamentary Affairs Minister, Kiren Rijiju today said that elected leaders should uphold the dignity and standards of the Parliament and Assemblies. Mr Rijiju said this in New Delhi, while addressing the 98th Birth Anniversary Commemoration Ceremony of First Speaker of Delhi Assembly, Charti Lal Goel. Mr Rijiju pointed out that several politicians today give callous statements only for political gains. He advised the newly elected MPs and MLAs to remember and honour the standards set by their predecessors, and preserve the spirit of democracy. The Minister said that the proper functioning of Parliament and State Assemblies safeguards people’s trust in democracy.
During the event, Mr Rijiju paid tribute to Charti Lal Goel, and said that Mr Goel was picked as the inaugural Speaker of the Delhi Assembly due to his strong personality and ability to lead. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta also called for elected leaders to carefully choose their words while in office. She urged the leaders to set outstanding standards for themselves and refrain from unparliamentary remarks. The Chief Minister underlined that the primary purpose of Assembly discussion is always about issues related to the people and never personal.
