Union Minister Jitendra Singh Assures No Need for Panic Over May Heat Conditions

Earth Sciences Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh today assured the public that there is no need to panic over the heat conditions expected during the month of May. Briefing the media in New Delhi, Mr Singh said, while some regions may witness above-normal temperatures and heatwave conditions, these will not be uniform across the country.

He added that the situation can be managed effectively through timely preparedness and by following advisories issued by the India Meteorological Department. The minister said relatively higher temperatures are expected during the second and fourth weeks of May, which may lead to heatwave conditions in parts of northwest, central and western India, as well as along the east coast.

However, during the first and third weeks, most parts of the country are likely to experience normal to below-normal temperatures due to rainfall and cloud cover associated with western disturbances and thunderstorms. The Minister also noted that higher night-time temperatures may increase heat discomfort, particularly in urban and coastal areas. He said neutral El Niño-Southern Oscillation conditions are currently prevailing, with El Niño likely to develop during the southwest monsoon season.

Dr. Singh emphasized that the government is fully prepared to handle heat-related challenges and stressed coordinated efforts at the state and district levels. He urged citizens to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged exposure during peak hours, and take care of vulnerable people.
