Union Science and Technology Minister Dr Jitendra Singh today said that the next industrial revolution in India will be biotechnology-driven and the country is steadily moving towards building a 1 trillion dollar bioeconomy by 2047. Addressing the 40th foundation day celebrations of the Department of Biotechnology in New Delhi, the Minister added that India has ensured that it will not remain a late entrant in emerging technologies and has positioned biotechnology as a key driver of future economic growth. Dr Singh underlined that the integration of biotechnology with digital tools, including artificial intelligence, will significantly enhance research efficiency, reduce timelines, and improve precision in areas such as gene sequencing, diagnostics, and drug discovery. He emphasised the importance of greater synergy among scientific departments to fully harness the potential of biotechnology. He further mentioned that a decade ago, India had fewer than 100 biotech startups, but now the number has crossed 11 thousand. Dr Singh highlighted that India’s bioeconomy has grown from nearly 10 billion dollars in 2014 to about 165.7 billion in 2024.
On the occasion, the Minister also launched an AI-driven Biotech Product Data Portal, SUJVIKA. The platform presents authenticated biotechnology product import data in a structured and accessible format, along with sector-wise insights into biochemical products, industrial enzymes, and other biotechnology imports.
