Union Minister and BJP leader Annapurna Devi has called for the establishment of a BJP government in West Bengal to ensure the safety of women. Addressing a women’s conference in Kolkata, she expressed concern that despite having a woman Chief Minister, the state’s record on women’s security, highlighted by incidents in Sandeshkhali and RG Kar, has become a matter of national debate. The Union Minister alleged that victims of atrocities in the state are often denied justice, claiming the state government has failed to implement central initiatives such as Fast Track Special Courts and women’s helplines.
She further noted that West Bengal reports the highest number of acid attacks in the country, charging the state administration with remaining silent while allegedly shielding perpetrators. Contrasting the Prime Minister’s vision with what she described as the state’s ‘corruption and misrule’, Annapurna Devi asserted that the Chief Minister has prioritised protecting anti-nationals over serving the public, making a ‘true change’ in governance essential for the state.
