Union Agriculture Minister Holds Discussion with Punjab Governor on Floods

Punjab is grappling with continuous flooding as heavy rains swell rivers across the state. Dams, including Bhakhra, are brimming, forcing controlled release. An alert has been sounded across the State to remain cautious as the release of water from dams and headworks would play spoilsport for already affected districts, including Patiala, Fazilka, Amritsar, Gurdaspur, Ferozepur, Kapurthala and the remaining 17 districts.

Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan spoke to the Punjab Governor and Chief Minister to take stock of the situation. He will visit the flood-affected state tomorrow before convening a high-level meeting on the situation. In light of the worsening flood situation, the state government has ordered the closure of all educational institutions until September 7. The decision has been taken to ensure the safety of students, faculty, and staff.

Punjab Governor, Gulab Chand Kataria, is visiting the flood-affected districts and meeting with the flood-affected people. Meanwhile, the floods have claimed 30 lives and have left over 3.54 lakh people affected. Standing crops in more than 1 lakh 48 thousand hectares have been damaged across the state, and hundreds of livestock have also been killed due to drowning. Relief and rescue operations are being carried out on a war footing.
