United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has expressed deep concern over the escalation of violence between Afghanistan and Pakistan and has called for an immediate cessation of hostilities.
At a press briefing yesterday, the Spokesperson for the Secretary-General Stéphane Dujarric, said the UN chief is deeply concerned about the impact of the violence on civilian populations. He reiterated his appeal to both sides to resolve their differences through diplomacy.
He added that the United Nations continues to call on all parties to comply with their obligations under international humanitarian law, especially to ensure the protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure.
UN humanitarian officials have noted that years of conflict, poverty and natural disasters, including drought and earthquakes, have left nearly half of Afghanistan’s population in need of humanitarian assistance. Mr Dujarric warned that this percentage could rise further if the fighting continues or escalates. He said the United Nations and its humanitarian partners are closely monitoring the situation and will continue to provide support wherever possible.
