Ukrainian President Zelenskyy demands details of Russia’s proposal for short-term ceasefire

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy today demanded the details of Russia’s proposal for a short-term ceasefire. Referring to a telephonic conversation between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin yesterday, Mr Zelenskyy said that Ukraine wishes for a long ceasefire. In a social media post, the Ukrainian President said he has instructed his representatives to contact the team of the President of the United States and clarify the details of the Russian proposal for a short-term ceasefire. He said Ukraine seeks peace and is doing the necessary diplomatic work to bring this war to a real end. He said that the Ukrainian proposal is a long-term ceasefire, reliable and guaranteed security for people, and a lasting peace. Mr Putin and Mr Trump held a telephonic conversation yesterday.

Meanwhile, the Kremlin said, President Putin will decide the dates and timings of a proposed ceasefire with Ukraine around Victory Day on May 9. The day marks the Soviet Union’s victory over Nazi Germany in 1945 and remains one of Russia’s most significant national commemorations. Presidential spokesperson Dimitry Peskov, while addressing the media in Moscow today, said Mr Putin expressed readiness to declare a truce during a phone call with U.S. President Trump. However, he noted that Russia has not yet received any response from Kyiv and there are no confirmed dates for further negotiations. President Trump hinted at a possible ceasefire in the Ukraine conflict following his telephonic conversation with his Russian counterpart Putin, while maintaining a hard line on Iran’s nuclear ambitions.
