Typhoon Kalmaegi has left at least five people dead and six injured in central Vietnam, according to local reports. Three fatalities occurred in Dak Lak province and two in Gia Lai province.
Authorities reported that 52 houses collapsed and 2,593 others were damaged. Rescue teams continue to assess the damage and carry out recovery operations.
The Vietnamese Ministry of Agriculture and Environment said the typhoon weakened into a tropical depression early this morning before dissipating into a low-pressure area over southern Laos.
Kalmaegi made landfall yesterday, bringing heavy rains and strong winds that uprooted trees, damaged roofs, shattered windows, and caused widespread power outages affecting hundreds of thousands of households. Emergency calls for roof collapses and flooding challenged rescue operations.
The storm also disrupted air travel, affecting eight airports, including Da Nang, Phu Bai, Lien Khuong, Chu Lai, Phu Cat, Tuy Hoa, Pleiku, and Buon Ma Thuot. More than 50 flights were impacted, and authorities have instructed round-the-clock monitoring and infrastructure inspections to ensure safety.
