Trump threatens to block US-Canada Bridge over China ties, demands compensation

US President Donald Trump has threatened to block a new bridge linking the United States and Canada, citing what he described as Canada’s hostility toward Washington and its growing ties with China. In a post on Truth Social, Mr. Trump said he would not allow the bridge to open unless the US is fully compensated for what it has provided to its northern neighbour. He added that negotiations would begin immediately and suggested the US should own at least half part of the asset.

Mr. Trump also referred to a recent agreement between Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Chinese President Xi Jinping to allow imports of Chinese electric vehicles into Canada. The US administration argued that the deal weakens Canada’s negotiating position with Washington, prompting Trump to threaten a 100 percent tariff on all Canadian imports.

The Gordie Howe International Bridge, scheduled to open in early 2026, is intended to be the only crossing allowing pedestrian and bicycle traffic between Detroit, Michigan, and Windsor, Ontario. Trump’s remarks have cast uncertainty over the project amid rising tensions between the two countries.
