Tropical Storm Melissa intensified over the Caribbean, with forecasters warning it could soon strengthen into a hurricane. The storm has already caused four deaths, three in Haiti and one in the Dominican Republic, while another person remains missing. Nearly 200 homes in the Dominican Republic have been destroyed, and water service for over half a million people has been disrupted. The US National Hurricane Center reported that Melissa could bring up to 25 inches of rain to southern Hispaniola and Jamaica through Tuesday, with Haiti’s Tiburon Peninsula facing nearly 90 centimeters of rainfall. The storm, moving northwest at 6 kilometers per hour, was last located southeast of Kingston, Jamaica. Melissa is the 13th storm of the Atlantic hurricane season, expected to be above normal.
