Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari emphasizes need for climate-resilient road infrastructure in fragile Himalayan region

Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari today emphasized the need for climate-resilient road infrastructure in the fragile Himalayan region. Mr Gadkari was addressing a workshop on Landslide Mitigation Measures for Resilient Hill Roads in New Delhi. The Minister said that sustained efforts are being undertaken through the adoption of global best practices and advanced technologies. Mr Gadkari said that a policy decision has been taken to prioritize slope stabilization before the commencement of road construction in hilly terrain to ensure long-term safety and durability. He emphasized that extensive topographical surveys using advanced technologies such as Light Detection and Ranging and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles are being undertaken, integrating landslide susceptibility mapping and historical data into the preparation of the Detailed Project Report. He also reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to building safe, seamless and sustainable highways across hilly regions.
