The Telangana Legislative Assembly today unanimously passed the Panchayat Raj (Amendment) Bill, 2025 and Telangana Municipalities (Amendment) Bill 2025 to facilitate the implementation of 42 percent reservation for Backward Classes.
The two bills propose to lift the 50 per cent ceiling on total reservations and provide 42 per cent reservations in election of members, chairpersons and mayors in Municipalities beside Panchayats.
Earlier, presenting the Bills, Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy reiterated the state government’s commitment for providing 42 per cent reservation to Backward Classes in education, employment and local bodies.
He stated that the 42 percent quota in local body elections would strengthen their representation, and asserted that Congress was delivering on its promise. He said, the 42 percent quota will be implemented for Backward Classes in the upcoming local body elections.
The opposition BRS members including K Takaramarao and G Kamalakar asked the Government to follow scientific procedures to get Presidential ascent and work for constitution amendment in Parliament as Tamil Nadu state did to lift the 50 per cent ceiling. BJP suggested the government to create Backward Classes subplan in budget, as promised and allocate key positions to them.
