Tamil Nadu Day is being celebrated today. It was on this day that a resolution was moved by the then Chief Minister C.N.Annadurai in the State Assembly to rename Madras State as Tamil Nadu in 1967. Tamil Nadu was formed on November 1, 195,6, with the name Madras State. After Independence on 15 August 1947, the Madras Presidency became the Madras Province. Madras State was formed on 26th January 1950. It included Coastal Andhra, Rayalaseema, which became part of Andhra in 1953, South Canara and Bellary districts were merged with Mysore State and Malabar District with the State of Travancore -Cochin to form Kerala in 1956.
Akashvani correspondent reports that “According to the 2011 census, the State has a population of approximately 77.39 million and the total number of electorate stands at approximately 6.18 Crore according to the last revision of polls. The State has a coastline of 906.9 kilometres. The State has 38 districts. The Government has projected its revenue receipts at Rs. 3,31,569 Crores, which constitutes 75.3 per cent of its revenue. The State’s GDP is estimated to be 35,67,818. The State Assembly has 234 Assembly constituencies and 39 Lok Sabha Constituencies, and 18 Rajya Sabha members .”
