The depression over the Bay of Bengal is expected to cross Sri Lanka’s coast on Friday between 5:30 PM and 11:30 PM, the Sri Lankan Department of Meteorology said. Speaking at a special media briefing on Thursday, Director General of Meteorology Athula Karunanayake said the system is currently located about 350 kilometres east of Pottuvil and is gradually intensifying into a deep depression.
He said the weather system is forecast to make landfall along Sri Lanka’s southeastern coast between Kalmunai and Hambantota. Mr. Karunanayake added that based on current assessments, the system is unlikely to intensify further into a cyclone.
