Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake met United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres at UN Headquarters on Thursday during his visit to attend the 80th session of the General Assembly.
The two leaders discussed Sri Lanka’s new economic reforms and broader initiatives for social and political development. President Dissanayake stressed the government’s commitment to restructuring the economy after years of crisis.
Mr Guterres commended Colombo’s reform programme and assured continued UN cooperation. Sri Lanka has long engaged with the UN system, from post-tsunami reconstruction to peacebuilding support following the end of its civil conflict in 2009. The meeting came as the new administration seeks international backing to stabilise the economy and restore global confidence.
