Sri Lankan Navy detains 25 Karaikal fishermen near International Maritime Boundary Line

Twenty-five fishermen from Karaikal were apprehended by the Sri Lankan Navy while fishing near the International Maritime Boundary Line this morning. The incident occurred near the Kaarainagar sea area. The Sri Lankan naval personnel, who were on patrol, alleged that the fishermen had crossed the maritime boundary. Two mechanised fishing boats were also seized.

Sources indicate that the detained fishermen are being taken to the naval camp at Kankesanthurai in Sri Lanka for further inquiry. The incident has caused concern among fishing communities in Karaikal, who have urged the authorities to take immediate steps to secure the fishermen’s release.
