Sri Lanka receives sacred Relics of Lord Buddha on its National Day

The sacred Devnimori Relics of Lord Buddha arrived in Colombo today aboard a special C-130J aircraft of the Indian Air Force, marking their first-ever international exposition. The Holy Relics were accompanied by a high-level Indian delegation headed by Gujarat Governor Acharya Devvrat and Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi, and were formally received by Sri Lanka’s Minister of Buddhasasana Sunil Senevi and Minister of Public Administration Prof. A.H.M.H. Abeyrathna. The relics have been taken to Gangaramaya Temple where they will be enshrined for public veneration starting tomorrow.

The arrival of the sacred relics coincided with Sri Lanka’s National Day, giving the occasion special spiritual and cultural significance. The exposition was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to Sri Lanka in April 2025 as part of India’s commitment to share its Buddhist heritage with the world and reaffirm its role as a responsible custodian of global Buddhist heritage.
