Sri Lanka Parliament to debate no-confidence motion against Energy Minister on April 10

Sri Lanka’s Parliament will debate a no-confidence motion against Energy Minister Kumara Jayakody on April 10, following allegations of administrative failure and corruption. The Parliamentary Business Committee scheduled the debate from 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. after the Opposition submitted the motion to the Speaker earlier today.

The motion accuses Jayakody of failing to ensure adequate and high-quality coal supplies for the Lakvijaya Coal Power Plant in Norochcholai, a key component of the country’s power generation network. It argues that the lapse amounts to a serious breach of ministerial responsibility. The Opposition also cited ongoing legal proceedings, noting that Jayakody has been charged before the Colombo High Court by Sri Lanka’s Bribery Commission over an alleged act of corruption during his tenure at a state-owned fertilizer company. The minister has not publicly responded to the allegations.
