As the south-west monsoon gradually establishes over Sri Lanka, the island nation is expected to experience intensified rainfall and strong winds over the coming hours. The Department of Meteorology has warned that very heavy rainfall exceeding 200 mm could occur in parts of the Western, Sabaragamuwa and North-Western provinces, while heavy showers above 100 mm are likely in the Galle, Matara, Kandy and Nuwara Eliya districts.
Showers and thundershowers are forecast at times across several south-western regions, with intermittent rain also expected in the Northern Province and Anuradhapura District. Fairly strong winds reaching 35-45 kmph are expected over the western slopes of the central hills and parts of the Northern, North-Central, northwestern and Southern provinces. Authorities have urged the public to take precautions against localised strong winds, lightning and possible flooding as monsoon conditions strengthen across the island.
