In the ICC Women’s ODI Cricket World Cup, Sri Lanka defeated Bangladesh by 7 runs at the Dr DY Patil Sports Academy in Navi Mumbai last night. Opting to bat first after winning the toss, Sri Lanka posted 202 all out in 48.4 overs, with the help of Hasini Perera’s 85 runs. For Bangladesh, Shorna Akter took three wickets.
In reply, Bangladesh looked strong at 176 for 4 in 45.1 overs but collapsed to 195 for 9 in their full 50 overs, falling short of the target. In the final over, Bangladesh needed 9 runs to win but lost four wickets in the first four balls, with Sri Lanka captain Chamari Athapaththu claiming three of them to seal a dramatic victory.
For Bangladesh, captain Nigar Sultana scored 77 runs, while Sharmin Akhter made an unbeaten 64. For Sri Lanka, captain Athapaththu took 4 wickets.
The result keeps Sri Lanka’s semi-final hopes alive, while Bangladesh’s campaign ends following their fifth defeat of the tournament.
