Sri Lanka: 21 people killed in bus accident in Gerandiella area at Kotmale

In a devastating bus accident that took place early this morning in the Gerandiella area at Kotmale in Sri Lanka, 21 people have lost lives with over 35 injured. The private bus, en route from Kataragama to Kurunegala, plunged into a ravine after skidding off a winding, rain-slicked road.

The vehicle was reportedly carrying over 50 passengers. Police said initial findings point to speeding and treacherous road conditions as possible causes. Investigators are also probing mechanical failure or driver negligence.

Rescue efforts by police, emergency services, and villagers continued for hours to extricate victims from the wreckage.
The Road Development Authority will inspect the site for safety lapses. This marks one of Sri Lanka’s worst road accidents in recent months, renewing calls for stricter transport safety enforcement.
