Special General Convention of Nepali Congress held in Kathmandu amid internal dissent

A Special General Convention of the Nepali Congress was held at Bhrikutimandap in Kathmandu today by supporters of party General Secretaries Gagan Kumar Thapa and Bishwa Prakash Sharma. Ahead of the two-day convention’s inaugural session, party leaders and activists from across Nepal arrived at the venue in colourful processions accompanied by music and tableaux.

Rallies by supporters travelling from outside the Kathmandu Valley led to traffic congestion and slow movement in parts of the city. Thousands of party leaders and workers gathered at Bhrikutimandap, where the venue and surrounding roads were decorated with party flags, banners, and gates. The convention is being presided over by Nepali Congress Kathmandu President Krishna Sabuj Baniya, with a closed-door session scheduled for Monday.

The special convention follows a request submitted on the 15th of October last year, backed by over 54 per cent of convention delegates. However, the event has not been supported by the party’s establishment faction, including President Sher Bahadur Deuba, which maintains that a regular general convention scheduled for May 2026 makes the special meeting unnecessary. The holding of the convention has highlighted growing internal divisions within the Nepali Congress, despite assurances by senior leaders that the party will remain united.
