Southwest Monsoon Hits Karnataka; Red Alert in Coastal Areas

South West Monsoon has advanced in Karnataka, with coastal Karnataka receiving copious rainfall. Mangaluru, Panambur and Karwar received maximum rainfall. The Met department has issued a red alert in the coastal belt. In Dakshina Kannada district, relentless rain and gusty winds have uprooted trees and damaged electric poles. Netravathi, Kumaradhara and Phalguni rivers are flowing at higher levels.

Uttara Kannada district Deputy Commissioner K Lakshmipriya has called for caution to the public venturing out during the heavy showers and high sea waves. The fishermen have been advised against venturing out into the sea. The district administration has introduced helpline numbers for the people in distress.

 

Torrential rainfall in Chikmagalur has disrupted normal life. Gusty winds with incessant rainfall have uprooted trees leading to power cuts. An autorickshaw driver was killed today when a tree fell on the vehicle. Two cars fell into Hemavathi tributaries due to submerged roads.

 

Landslide is reported near Kavikal Gandi road. Tunga, Bhadra, Hemavathi rivers are increasing their level of flow. Gajanur dam in Shivamogga is receiving steady inflow of 2000 cusecs on Tunga river and the authorities have warned of releasing 800 cusecs water from the dam. Heavy downpour is reported from Kogadu also. Roads are cut off due to trees falling across them. In the last 24 hours, the birthplace of Cauvery river Bagamandala received a record 168 mm rainfall. Harangi reservoir with a capacity of 2859 feet is almost full.
