South Korean Court sentences former first lady Kim Keon Hee to 20 months in prison over bribery case

A South Korean court has sentenced former First Lady Kim Keon Hee to one year and eight months in prison for accepting bribes from the Unification Church. The Seoul Central District Court today cleared Kim, wife of former President Yoon Suk Yeol, of separate charges related to stock price manipulation and violations of political funding laws. Kim was accused of receiving at least 0.2 million dollar in bribes and luxury gifts from businesses, politicians, and the religious group.

Prosecutors said she abused her power and undermined the constitutional separation of religion and state. Earlier last month, Kim denied all charges, calling them deeply unjust, but later apologised for causing trouble. Her husband was removed from office last year and sentenced to five years in prison over his short and disastrous declaration of martial law.
